location:
Barnett Mine, Rosiclare, Pope Co., Illinois, USA
description: This mine was a vein deposit located a few miles west of Rosiclare. In the mid-1960s a large pocket within your site here producing very unique groupings of calcite, some looking almost like pineapples. This large matrix specimen is from this pocket, and is quite unusual in that the calcite crystals are actually sitting on rosy purple cubic fluorite crystals as a matrix. The colorless calcite crystals are scalenohedral and habit and measured to 4.0 cm in height. Some of the pineapple nature is evident and some of the crystal groupings. These are sitting on rosy purple cubic fluorite crystals measuring as large as 4.0 cm on edge. This sits perfectly by itself for display and shows well all around. Measures 20.0 x 16.0 x 11.5 cm in size. The calcite crystals are opaque to slightly translucent near the terminations. Very minimal cleaving is present as seen. A wonderful old-time cabinet display piece from this famous mining district. Shipping weight: 9.7 pounds.
Size: 20.0 x 16.0 x 11.5 cm (large-cabinet)
