Calcite on Barite
specimen number:
4751020
location:
Greenside mine, Patterdale, Eden, Cumbria, England, UK
description:
A rare British locality piece showing glassy gemmy double terminated crystals of calcite measuring to 3.0 cm in length coming off a matrix of white crystalline barite. Is in really good condition. Good history on this piece as well, as at one time this was part of the collection of Clarence Bement, which went to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In the video you can see on the backside of the specimen a small black arrow. My understanding is that these were placed by Louis Gratacap, maybe in the 1920s, the arrow telling Museum personnel in which direction to display the specimen. The calcite crystals do fluoresce red.
